Teacher tip

Ask kids to write the dollars and the cents separately first, then put them together with the dot.

How to use it

  • Set up a pretend store with the prices from the sheet.
  • Write cents and dollars side by side on the board: 75¢ and $0.75.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Writing $5.7 for $5.07. The cents always take two digits.

Talk about it

  • Where do people still use coins?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Ask kids to count the coins in a jar at home with a grown-up.
