What kids do

“Are the parts equal? Circle Yes or No. If yes, write halves, thirds or fourths.”

Teacher tip

Cut real paper shapes in fair and unfair ways and ask kids to vote: equal or not?

How to use it

  • Ask kids to say each fraction out loud as “3 out of 4 equal parts.”
  • Shade lightly with colored pencil so mistakes are easy to fix.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Adding the denominators (1/4 + 1/4 = 2/8). Draw it to show the pieces stay fourths.

Talk about it

  • Where do you use fractions at home, like in a recipe or a pizza?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Bake or pretend to bake: double or halve a simple recipe.
