What kids do

“Writers know their characters better than anyone. Fill in the file.”

  1. Portrait
  2. The facts
  3. What do they want more than anything?
  4. What scares them?
  5. Their secret (nobody else in the story knows it):

How to run it

  • Explain that a story is usually about a character who wants something and has trouble getting it.
  • Push for specific answers: not “food” but “the last slice of Grandma’s lemon pie.”
  • Keep the files in writing folders to reuse in later stories.

Talk about it

  • How could the thing they fear get in the way of what they want?
  • When would be the best moment in a story to reveal the secret?
  • Which fact makes your character feel real?

Take it further

Write a scene where the character almost gets what they want, and then something goes wrong.

Draw first, then write
