What kids do

“Every sentence in this paragraph starts with I. Rewrite it so the sentences start in different ways.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. I woke up early. I ate pancakes. I got dressed. I walked to school. I saw my best friend. I played tag at recess.
  2. Try starting with
  3. My new paragraph

Teacher tip

Make a list of openers together: first, after that, on the weekend, suddenly.

How to use it

  • Read the paragraph aloud together before kids mark anything.
  • Model one fix on the document camera, thinking out loud.
  • Read the directions aloud so the sheet is about writing, not decoding the directions.

Watch for

Kids who rewrite everything instead of fixing what is marked. Keep changes small and on purpose.

Talk about it

  • What is this paragraph mostly about?
  • Which sentence on your sheet are you proudest of? Why?

Take it further

Have kids use the same steps on a paragraph from their own journal.
