What kids do

“This paragraph has 4 sentence mistakes: run-ons and fragments. Fix each one, then copy the paragraph.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Run-on: two sentences crashed together. Split them. · Fragment: part of a sentence. Add what is missing.
  2. My cat Pepper loves boxes she sits in every box she finds. Yesterday a big box came in the mail. Jumped right in. She stayed there all day she did not want to come out. At dinner time. We finally gave her a treat to get her out.
  3. Copy the paragraph with every mistake fixed.

Teacher tip

Have kids read each sentence aloud and ask: is it complete, and is it just one thought?

How to use it

  • Read the paragraph aloud together before kids mark anything.
  • Model one fix on the document camera, thinking out loud.
  • Keep a word wall or a word bank in reach so spelling does not stop the ideas.

Watch for

Kids who rewrite everything instead of fixing what is marked. Keep changes small and on purpose.

Talk about it

  • Which change made the biggest difference?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Have kids use the same steps on a paragraph from their own journal.
