What kids do

“The subject and verb in a sentence have to match. This paragraph has 6 verbs that do not match. Fix each one.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Find who or what the sentence is about. One thing: he likes. More than one: they like.
  2. My brother and I likes to build forts. We uses blankets and chairs. Our dog always try to get inside. The pillows is soft and comfy. Mom say we can keep it up until dinner. Building forts are the best!
  3. Copy the paragraph with every verb fixed.

Teacher tip

Have kids underline the subject and circle the verb in each sentence, then check that they match.

How to use it

  • Have kids use one color for revision and another for editing.
  • Post the editing or revision checklist on the board.
  • Let early writers draw first, then talk, then write.

Watch for

Revising and editing mixed up. Revising is the ideas; editing is the rules.

Talk about it

  • Which change made the biggest difference?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?
