What kids do

“In a title, capitalize the first word, the last word and every important word. Small words like a, the, of, in and to stay small unless they come first.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. 1. the lost kite of maple street
  2. 2. a dragon in my backpack
  3. 3. how to train a robot
  4. 4. the day the pancakes flew
  5. 5. my best friend is a shark
  6. 6. the mystery of the missing sock
  7. Make up a title for a book about you. Use capital letters the right way.

Teacher tip

Pull real books off the shelf and look at how the titles are capitalized on the cover.

How to use it

  • Show one mistake-filled sentence on the board and fix it together first.
  • Have kids read each sentence aloud to hear where the pauses and stops go.
  • Give a minute at the end to reread the work out loud to a partner.

Watch for

Capitals sprinkled in the middle of words. Review when a capital is needed.

Talk about it

  • How does the punctuation change the way you read it?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Start the day with one fix-it sentence on the board all week.
