What kids do

“A biography tells the true story of a real person’s life. Research someone you admire and plan their story.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Born (when and where):
  2. Big moments in their life, in order
  3. Why are they important?
  4. A challenge they faced How did they handle it?
  5. Write your first paragraph. Hook the reader with an amazing fact about the person.

Teacher tip

Have kids pick a person they admire and gather facts from two sources.

How to use it

  • Model taking notes as short phrases, not copied sentences.
  • Let kids pick a topic they already know a lot about for a first try.
  • Let early writers draw first, then talk, then write.

Watch for

Opinions sneaking into facts. Ask, “Is that a fact you can check?”

Talk about it

  • Where did your facts come from?
  • What did you change when you reread your work?

Take it further

Have kids teach their topic to the class in a two-minute talk.
