What kids do

“Pick an animal to teach about. Write and draw a fact in each box. Then write your first sentence.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. What it looks like
  2. My first sentence:

Teacher tip

Have animal books and pictures out so kids can find facts for each box.

How to use it

  • Show a nonfiction book that uses the same structure or text feature first.
  • Gather a stack of library books on the topic before kids start.
  • Model the first answer on the board, thinking out loud as you write.

Watch for

Copying sentences straight from the book. Have kids close the book, then write.

Talk about it

  • What is the most interesting fact you found?
  • Which sentence on your sheet are you proudest of? Why?

Take it further

Turn finished pages into a class nonfiction book for the library.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
