Thinking sheet · My world and community

If I Were Mayor

You’re the mayor for a day. What three things would you change in your town, and how?

Grades
1–5
Time
about 25 minutes
Kids practice
local government, persuasive writing, community needs

What kids do

“You’re in charge of the whole town! What will you do?”

  1. Me as mayor
  2. My three big ideas
  3. What the town looks like after my ideas
  4. My speech to the town: “Vote for me because…”

How to run it

  • Talk about what a mayor does.
  • Ideas should help lots of people, not just you.
  • Hold a short class election.

Talk about it

  • Who would your ideas help?
  • How much would they cost?
  • What would people disagree with?

Take it further

Write a letter to your real mayor.
