What kids do

“Read a story or a true book about history. Draw and write the 5 most important events in order.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. What happened, in order
  2. The most important event was… because…

Teacher tip

Use it with today’s read-aloud: stop after each big event and have kids sketch it in the next box.

How to use it

  • Count by tens or hundreds on the timeline ruler first.
  • Point out that dates get bigger as you move to the right.
  • Read the sheet aloud for early readers and let them answer with drawings.

Watch for

Kids who think everything long ago happened at the same time. Use spacing to show the gaps.

Talk about it

  • How long ago was this?
  • What question would you ask an expert on this topic?

Take it further

Ask a grandparent what life was like when they were young.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
