What kids do

“Read the facts about South America. Draw something you learned, then answer the questions.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. South America has 12 countries. Brazil is the biggest, and people there speak Portuguese.
  2. The Amazon is the biggest rain forest in the world. Jaguars, sloths, toucans and poison dart frogs live there.
  3. The Amazon River carries more water than any other river on Earth.
  4. The Andes are the longest mountain range on land. They run down the whole west side of the continent.
  5. Angel Falls, in Venezuela, is the tallest waterfall in the world: 3,212 feet.
  6. 1. What is the biggest rain forest in the world?

Teacher tip

Show the Amazon on a map. It is huge.

How to use it

  • Spin a globe and let kids put a finger on a continent to start the lesson.
  • Sing a continents song before the sheet.
  • Keep a classroom globe, a world map and a U.S. map in reach while kids work.

Watch for

Mixing up countries and continents. Africa is a continent with 54 countries.

Talk about it

  • Why is there so much ocean on a globe?
  • How does this connect to where we live?

Take it further

Make a continent passport and stamp it as you learn about each one.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
