What kids do

“Read the facts about Australia. Draw something you learned, then answer the questions.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Australia is the smallest continent. It is also a country. Its capital is Canberra.
  2. The Great Barrier Reef, off its northeast coast, is the biggest coral reef in the world.
  3. Koalas, wombats and platypuses live in the wild only in Australia.
  4. Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, so its seasons are the opposite of ours. Christmas comes in summer!
  5. Most Australians live near the coast. The dry middle of the country is called the Outback.
  6. 2. What is the biggest coral reef in the world?

Teacher tip

Kids love that Christmas is in summer there. Ask why.

How to use it

  • Keep a world map on the wall and point to each place as you read.
  • Compare the map on the sheet with a globe.
  • Use finished sheets for a quick gallery walk or a partner share.

Watch for

Mixing up countries and continents. Africa is a continent with 54 countries.

Talk about it

  • Which continent do we live on?
  • What did you learn that surprised you?
