What kids do

“A bird flying above your room sees only the tops of things. Draw a map of your bedroom or classroom from above, and make a key.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. From above, a table looks like a rectangle and a round rug looks like a circle.
  2. You see the tops of things, not their sides or legs.
  3. My map (seen from above)
  4. What it stands for

Teacher tip

Look at a toy from above and from the side.

How to use it

  • Label north, south, east and west on the classroom walls before the sheet.
  • Play a quick direction game: “Take two steps north.”
  • Keep a classroom globe, a world map and a U.S. map in reach while kids work.

Watch for

Kids who think north means “up” on any page. Turn the map and talk about it.

Talk about it

  • Why do maps need a key?
  • What question would you ask an expert on this topic?

Take it further

Hide a treasure in the classroom and give directions to find it.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
