What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Number the four steps to empathy from 1 to 4.
  2. Imagine how you would feel if it happened to you.
  3. Show you care with kind words or a helpful action.
  4. Notice the person’s face, body and voice.
  5. Ask how they feel, then really listen.
  6. Try it: Jonah drops his lunch tray in the cafeteria and some kids laugh.
  7. 4. I show I care:

Teacher tip

Act out the lunch tray moment with all four steps.

How to use it

  • Catch kids being kind and name exactly what they did.
  • Keep a kindness jar: add a pom-pom for each kind act you notice.
  • Keep finished sheets in an SEL folder so kids can look back on their growth.

Watch for

Kindness that is only for friends. Talk about being kind to people we don’t know well too.

Talk about it

  • Is it ever hard to be kind? When?
  • How might someone else see it differently?

Take it further

Write kindness notes for another class, the office staff or the custodian.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
