What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Sound is made when something vibrates: it moves back and forth very fast. The vibrations travel through the air to your ears.
  2. Circle True or False.
  3. Sound is made when something vibrates.
  4. Sound can travel through air.
  5. Sound cannot travel through water.
  6. Louder sounds have bigger vibrations.
  7. A guitar string makes sound while it is still.
  8. A drum makes sound when its top vibrates.

Teacher tip

Have kids hold a hand on their throat and hum loud and soft.

How to use it

  • Let kids touch their throats while they hum to feel vibration.
  • Stretch a rubber band across a box and pluck it.
  • Let partners compare answers and settle any differences with a book or a video.

Watch for

Mixing up pitch and volume. Loud and soft is volume; high and low is pitch.

Talk about it

  • How is loud different from high?
  • What did you notice that surprised you?

Take it further

Make a class band from shakers, drums and rubber band guitars.
