What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Sit quietly for one minute, inside or outside, and listen. Write down six sounds you hear.
  2. The most interesting sound was… because…

Teacher tip

Take the walk in silence. Kids hear far more when no one talks.

How to use it

  • Let kids touch their throats while they hum to feel vibration.
  • Stretch a rubber band across a box and pluck it.
  • Start with a two-minute “I notice, I wonder” talk about the picture on the sheet.

Watch for

Mixing up pitch and volume. Loud and soft is volume; high and low is pitch.

Talk about it

  • What is vibrating when you hear this sound?
  • How could we find out if that is true?

Take it further

Make a class band from shakers, drums and rubber band guitars.
