What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Circle True or False.
  2. The sun is a star.
  3. Earth is the third planet from the sun.
  4. The moon makes its own light.
  5. Jupiter is the biggest planet.
  6. Mars is called the Red Planet.
  7. Saturn is the only planet with rings.
  8. Earth takes about 365 days to go around the sun.

Teacher tip

Ask kids to rewrite the false facts so they are true. That is where the learning happens.

How to use it

  • Line up eight kids as the planets in order across the room or the playground.
  • Use a lamp and a ball to show why the moon seems to change shape.
  • Start with a two-minute “I notice, I wonder” talk about the picture on the sheet.

Watch for

The moon makes no light of its own. It reflects sunlight.

Talk about it

  • Why can’t people live on most planets?
  • How could we find out if that is true?

Take it further

Build a scale model of the planets’ distances with toilet paper squares in the hallway.
