What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Draw a food chain with four living things. Label each one: producer or consumer.
  2. Label the energy pyramid.
  3. Only about one tenth of the energy at each level moves up to the next. That is why there are lots of plants, fewer plant eaters and only a few top predators.

Teacher tip

Let kids pick a habitat they love, like the ocean or the forest.

How to use it

  • Use a ball of yarn to build a food web in a circle of kids.
  • Start every food chain with the sun so kids see where energy comes from.
  • Let partners compare answers and settle any differences with a book or a video.

Watch for

Arrows in a food chain point to the eater: they show where the energy goes.

Talk about it

  • Why are decomposers important?
  • Where have you seen this outside of school?

Take it further

Make a hanging food chain mobile from paper and string.
