What kids do

“Two more ways to spell long e! Read, trace, find and fill in the ey and ie words.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. 2. Read and trace ey · ie
  2. 3. Color every word with ey or ie
  3. 4. Write ey or ie to finish each word
  4. Tip: ie can also say /ī/, as in pie. That one is on the igh and ie sheet.
  5. 5. Read the sentence. Trace the ey and ie words.
  6. The monkey found a key in the field.
  7. 6. Draw a monkey with a key

Teacher tip

Key and monkey end in ey; field has ie. Read them aloud.

How to use it

  • Show the magic e with a wand: tap the e and the vowel says its name.
  • Write the long vowel spellings for one sound side by side on the board.
  • Use the sheet as a quick check after you teach the sound, then reteach in a small group.

Watch for

Vowel team rules have exceptions, like bread and head. Treat them as words to remember.

Talk about it

  • What other way could this sound be spelled?
  • How did you figure out that word?

Take it further

Play “short or long” with word cards and a jump left or right.
