What kids do

“Fill in the box to make the fact true. Think about the multiplication fact that matches!”

Teacher tip

Kids who know their facts see the multiplication fact hiding in each one. Ask them to write it next to the box.

How to use it

  • Remind kids that every division fact has a multiplication partner, and say a few pairs out loud first.
  • Let kids use counters and paper plates for the first few problems.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Remainders bigger than the divisor. That means one more group fits.

Talk about it

  • What multiplication fact helped you with this one?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Write a division story where the remainder changes the answer, like buses for a field trip.
