What kids do

“Divide. Watch the zeros disappear!”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Dividing by 10 takes away one zero, by 100 two, by 1,000 three.

Sample problems

  • 150 ÷ 3 =
  • 300 ÷ 100 =
  • 20,000 ÷ 1,000 =
  • 44,000 ÷ 1,000 =

Teacher tip

Pair it with the multiply by 10, 100 and 1,000 sheet so kids see that division undoes the pattern.

How to use it

  • Post the steps (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) where everyone can see them.
  • Ask kids to check two answers with multiplication before they hand it in.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who skip the subtract step in long division and lose track. Have them say each step out loud.

Talk about it

  • What does the remainder mean in this problem?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Have kids make their own division wheel or fact triangle for a partner.
