Teacher tip

This is a great discussion sheet. Ask kids to argue for their choice on each story.

How to use it

  • Post the steps (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) where everyone can see them.
  • Ask kids to check two answers with multiplication before they hand it in.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who skip the subtract step in long division and lose track. Have them say each step out loud.

Talk about it

  • What does the remainder mean in this problem?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Have kids make their own division wheel or fact triangle for a partner.
