What kids do

“Take away easy groups (like 100, 10 or 5 groups) until you can’t. Add up the groups you took away.”

Sample problems

  • 791 ÷ 7
  • 252 ÷ 6
  • 619 ÷ 6
  • 1503 ÷ 9

Teacher tip

Let kids choose their own chunks. Bigger chunks are faster, but any chunk works.

How to use it

  • Post the steps (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) where everyone can see them.
  • Ask kids to check two answers with multiplication before they hand it in.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who skip the subtract step in long division and lose track. Have them say each step out loud.

Talk about it

  • How do you know your answer is reasonable?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Write a division story where the remainder changes the answer, like buses for a field trip.
