What kids do

“Count backwards. Write the missing numbers. 10, 9, 8… blast off!”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Countdown from 10
  2. Countdown from 15
  3. Countdown from 20

Teacher tip

Do a whole-class rocket countdown with a crouch and a jump on “blast off”. Kids then write the sequence they just said.

How to use it

  • Let early counters use real cubes on top of the pictures.
  • Count out loud as a class first, then let kids count in a whisper voice on their own.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who recount the whole group instead of counting on. Ask, “You already know there are 5 here. What comes next?”

Talk about it

  • Did you count by ones, or did you see a group right away?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Set up a counting jar at the center and have kids estimate before they count.
