What kids do

“Circle the dots in pairs. Is one dot left over? Write the number, then circle odd or even.”

Teacher tip

Pair kids up and ask “Is our class even or odd today?” Everyone finds a partner, or one is left over.

How to use it

  • Ask kids to touch each item as they count, and to cross it off if they lose track.
  • Do one row together with a ten frame on the board so kids see the five and the ten.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Kids who say the numbers faster than they touch the objects. Slow the pointing down.

Talk about it

  • What number comes next? How do you know?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Play “I’m thinking of a number” with clues like more than 12 and less than 15.
