What kids do

“After you read at home, pick one square and do it on the back or in your notebook. Color the square when you finish.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Write a different ending to the story.
  2. Write three questions
  3. Give the book 1 to 5 stars. Write why.
  4. Draw a map of where the story happens and label it.
  5. Find five new or interesting words and write what they mean.
  6. Write a letter to the main character giving advice.
  7. How did the main character change from the start to the end?

Teacher tip

Let kids share their favorite response in class each week.

How to use it

  • Explain the sheet to families at back-to-school night or in a note.
  • Keep the sheet in the same folder every day so kids know where to find it.
  • Print it on colored paper so kids and helpers can spot it quickly.

Watch for

Kids without support or a quiet place at home. Offer a time to finish at school.

Talk about it

  • Where is a good place to work at home?
  • How can this help you be ready to learn?
