What kids do

“Plan a gradual release lesson: you show it, you practice it together, then students try it on their own.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. I model and think
  2. Partners try it
  3. Students show me
  4. If a student is stuck, I will…

Words on this sheet

I doaloudWe doYou do

Teacher tip

Plan a check after “we do” so you know who is ready for “you do.”

How to use it

  • Use the notes boxes to jot down what worked for next year.
  • Print a fresh copy each week and file finished plans in a binder.
  • Fill one in with the class the first time so kids see what a finished one looks like.

Watch for

Plans that skip the check for understanding. Add one to every lesson.

Talk about it

  • What will I do for students who need more help?
  • What is one thing that went well this week?

Take it further

Look back at plans at the end of a unit to adjust pacing for next year.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
