What kids do

“Cut out the coupons and give them as rewards. Students write their name on the back and staple the coupon to the assignment.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Skip one homework assignment of your choice. Staple this coupon where your homework would go.
  2. Do only half of tonight’s homework:
  3. Turn in one assignment a day late, with no points off.
  4. Choose any five problems on a math page and skip the rest.
  5. Swap one written assignment for 20 minutes of reading a book you love.
  6. Show your answers with drawings and labels instead of sentences.
  7. Play a board or card game with your family instead of tonight’s homework.
  8. Bring this to your teacher for a surprise homework reward.

Teacher tip

Hand out coupons as rewards for effort, not just for perfect work.

How to use it

  • Check the sheet quickly each morning as part of the routine.
  • Show kids how to fill it in before sending it home the first time.
  • Keep a stack of copies in a labeled tray so you can grab one without stopping the lesson.

Watch for

Families who feel judged by tracking. Keep notes kind and focused on help.

Talk about it

  • What helps you get your homework done?
  • Why do you think we use this in our classroom?
