What kids do

“The caller reads a number in hundreds, tens and ones. Write it in your head and cover it on your card. Five in a row wins!”

Teacher tip

Have base-ten blocks out to show the number on the caller card.

How to use it

  • Cut the caller cards ahead of time and keep them in an envelope.
  • Use counters, beans or crayons to cover squares so cards can be reused.
  • Slide it into a sheet protector so kids can play again with a dry-erase marker.

Watch for

Kids who mark without solving. Ask winners to read back their squares.

Talk about it

  • What did you do when you were not sure?
  • What was the trickiest part? How did you get past it?

Take it further

Play for a full card (blackout) for a longer game.
