What kids do

“The caller reads three words. Listen for the first sound. Find that letter on your card and cover it. Four in a row wins!”

Teacher tip

Have kids say the sound as they cover the letter.

How to use it

  • Cut the caller cards ahead of time and keep them in an envelope.
  • Use counters, beans or crayons to cover squares so cards can be reused.
  • Use it as a center, an early finisher choice, an indoor recess activity or a sub day page.

Watch for

Kids who mark without solving. Ask winners to read back their squares.

Talk about it

  • Did you solve any in your head?
  • What would you change to make it harder?

Take it further

Play for a full card (blackout) for a longer game.
