What kids do

“Done early? These puzzles take some real thinking. Work in pencil.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. 1 Sudoku: use the numbers 1 to 6 once in each row, column and box.
  2. 2 Number pyramid: each brick is the sum of the two bricks under it.
  3. 3 Finish each analogy.
  4. 4 Solve each fact. Find its letter to answer the riddle.
  5. What has its bottom at the top?

Sample problems

  • 5×3
  • 3×7
  • 5×7
  • 4×4

Teacher tip

Have kids pencil in the numbers they are sure of on the sudoku first and leave the rest blank.

How to use it

  • Keep copies in an early finisher bin kids can reach on their own.
  • Teach kids the routine: finish, check your work, then pick a page.
  • Slide it into a sheet protector so kids can play again with a dry-erase marker.

Watch for

Kids who rush their main work to get to the fun page. Check the main work first.

Talk about it

  • What would you like to see on the next page?
  • What was the trickiest part? How did you get past it?

Take it further

Have kids make their own activity for the next early finisher page.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
