What kids do

“Socks keep going missing from your house. Who is taking them, and why? Plan the clues, then write the story.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. It takes socks to:
  2. Write your story
  3. It started with one missing sock.

Teacher tip

Have kids plan the clues first and the thief last, so the reader can follow along and guess.

How to use it

  • Have kids draw a quick sketch to plan before they write.
  • Share a short example story you wrote from the same prompt.
  • Model the first answer on the board, thinking out loud as you write.

Watch for

Kids copying a friend’s idea. Brainstorm three ideas together so everyone has options.

Talk about it

  • What was the funniest idea you had?
  • Which sentence on your sheet are you proudest of? Why?

Take it further

Hold an author’s chair where volunteers read their stories aloud.
