What kids do

“Make a page like a real nonfiction book. Fill in every text feature about a topic you know.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Picture with labels
  2. Did you know? An amazing fact
  3. Paragraph (write one important word in bold, darker letters)
  4. Glossary Your bold word: what it means

Teacher tip

Go on a text feature hunt in nonfiction library books before kids build their page.

How to use it

  • Model taking notes as short phrases, not copied sentences.
  • Let kids pick a topic they already know a lot about for a first try.
  • Give a minute at the end to reread the work out loud to a partner.

Watch for

Opinions sneaking into facts. Ask, “Is that a fact you can check?”

Talk about it

  • Where did your facts come from?
  • What did you change when you reread your work?

Take it further

Have kids teach their topic to the class in a two-minute talk.
