What kids do

“These endings all sound alike. Finish each word with -le, -el or -al, then sort the words.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Add -le, -el or -al
  2. Write a sentence with one word from each column.

Teacher tip

Have kids read each word aloud. They sound the same, so this is a sort to memorize by sight.

How to use it

  • Let kids sort words with a partner first, then check together.
  • Have kids say the word slowly and tap the sounds.
  • Give a minute at the end to reread the work out loud to a partner.

Watch for

Frustration on long lists. Split the sheet into two short sessions.

Talk about it

  • Which word broke the rule?
  • Where else do writers use this skill?

Take it further

Play a quick spelling relay with whiteboards at the end of the week.
