What kids do

“Look at the word. Say it. Cover it. Write it. Check it! Do it for each word on your list.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Look at the word and say it. · Cover it. · Write it from memory. · Uncover and check. · Fix it and write it again.
  2. Cover and write

Teacher tip

Model the routine slowly with one word, then let kids practice it with a partner.

How to use it

  • Read each word aloud and have kids repeat it before they write.
  • Introduce the pattern with a short list on the board and underline it.
  • Model the first answer on the board, thinking out loud as you write.

Watch for

Kids who memorize words without the pattern. Ask them to spell a new word with it.

Talk about it

  • How can you check if a word is spelled right?
  • What did you change when you reread your work?

Take it further

Have kids hunt for the pattern in a library book and list what they find.
