What kids do

“Read the facts about the coldest continent. Draw it, then answer the questions.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Antarctica is the coldest, windiest and driest continent. The South Pole is near its middle.
  2. Almost all of it is covered by ice. In places the ice is more than 2 miles thick.
  3. No people live there all the time. Scientists visit to study the ice, the sky and the animals.
  4. Emperor penguins, seals and whales live there. Polar bears do not: they live in the Arctic, at the other end of the Earth.
  5. In winter it is dark for months. In summer the sun does not set for months.
  6. Draw penguins on the ice in Antarctica
  7. 2. Do polar bears live in Antarctica?
  8. 3. What covers almost all of Antarctica?

Teacher tip

Kids love that there are no polar bears in Antarctica. Ask why.

How to use it

  • Spin a globe and let kids put a finger on a continent to start the lesson.
  • Sing a continents song before the sheet.
  • Keep a classroom globe, a world map and a U.S. map in reach while kids work.

Watch for

Mixing up countries and continents. Africa is a continent with 54 countries.

Talk about it

  • Why is there so much ocean on a globe?
  • How does this connect to where we live?

Take it further

Make a continent passport and stamp it as you learn about each one.
