What kids do

“Find all 10 words. They go across, down or diagonally down. Cross each one off the list!”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Write your two favorite words from the list:

Words on this sheet

Teacher tip

Diagonal words are new at this level. Show one together first.

How to use it

  • Read every word on the sheet out loud together before kids start.
  • Use it in a literacy center with a partner who checks the reading.
  • Play it again later in the week with a different partner. Repeat play builds speed.

Watch for

Kids who guess from the first letter. Ask them to look at the whole word, all the way to the end.

Talk about it

  • Can you find one of these words in a book from the class library?
  • Which words look alike? How do you tell them apart?

Take it further

Play a quick round of “flash and read” with the words at the end of the day.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
