What kids do

“Color only the squares that say “they”. Watch out for look-alikes!”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Color only the “they” squares. Start at the top left.
  2. How many times did you read “they”?

Words on this sheet

theytherethatheythentheirthemthe

Teacher tip

The look-alikes are the point. Ask kids to read each square before they color it.

How to use it

  • Use it in a literacy center with a partner who checks the reading.
  • Play it again later in the week with a different partner. Repeat play builds speed.
  • Keep a sight word ring of flash cards so kids can check spellings.

Watch for

Kids who guess from the first letter. Ask them to look at the whole word, all the way to the end.

Talk about it

  • Which words look alike? How do you tell them apart?
  • Which word was the hardest to read? Why?

Take it further

Ask kids to use two of the words in one sentence and draw it.
