What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Write 1 to 7 to put the steps of the scientific method in order.
  2. Make a hypothesis: a guess you can test.
  3. Share your results.
  4. Ask a question.
  5. Record and look at the data.
  6. Do some research.
  7. Draw a conclusion.
  8. Test it with an experiment.

Teacher tip

Run a quick class experiment the same day and point to each step as you go.

How to use it

  • Run a quick class experiment first, like which paper towel soaks up the most, and fill in the sheet together.
  • Post the steps of the scientific method on the wall.
  • Start with a two-minute “I notice, I wonder” talk about the picture on the sheet.

Watch for

A wrong hypothesis is not a failure. Scientists learn from it too.

Talk about it

  • What did you change, and what stayed the same?
  • What did you notice that surprised you?

Take it further

Let kids design their own fair test and present it at a mini science fair.
