What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Light reflects, or bounces, off things. Smooth, shiny things like mirrors reflect light so well that you can see a picture in them.
  2. 1. Circle True or False.
  3. A mirror reflects light.
  4. Light travels in straight lines.
  5. Rough, dark things reflect more light than shiny things.
  6. We see the moon because it reflects sunlight.
  7. A mirror image is flipped left to right.
  8. Light bends a little when it goes from air into water.

Teacher tip

Hand out small mirrors so kids can check their mirror-writing.

How to use it

  • Turn off the lights and use a flashlight to make shadows on the wall.
  • Go outside at two times of day to look at shadows.
  • Let partners compare answers and settle any differences with a book or a video.

Watch for

Never look straight at the sun, even with sunglasses.

Talk about it

  • What happens when light hits a mirror?
  • How could we find out if that is true?

Take it further

Put on a shadow puppet show with paper puppets.
