What kids do

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Find your pulse: press two fingers on the inside of your wrist, just under your thumb, or on the side of your neck. Each bump is one heartbeat. Count the beats for 15 seconds, then multiply by 4.
  2. I predict my heart will beat fastest after
  3. Beats in 15 seconds
  4. 10 jumping jacks
  5. 1 minute of running in place
  6. Resting for 2 minutes after
  7. Conclusion: when did your heart beat fastest? Why do you think your heart speeds up when you move?

Teacher tip

Show kids how to find a pulse on their neck or wrist and practice once together.

How to use it

  • Trace one child’s outline on butcher paper and add the parts as you learn them.
  • Have kids feel their own bones and heartbeat as they work.
  • Start with a two-minute “I notice, I wonder” talk about the picture on the sheet.

Watch for

Body talk can be personal for some kids. Keep examples general.

Talk about it

  • What does your heart do while you sleep?
  • Where have you seen this outside of school?
