What kids do

“Read each sentence. Draw a picture to show what it says.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. 1. A cat naps on a mat.
  2. 2. A dog digs in the mud.
  3. 3. A red bug is on a log.
  4. 4. A fox sits in a box.

Teacher tip

Ask kids to read each sentence to you before they draw.

How to use it

  • Say a word and let kids hold up a finger for each sound they hear.
  • Work on one short vowel at a time before mixing them.
  • Send it home with a note asking families to listen to their child read the words.

Watch for

Kids who sound out each letter but can’t blend. Practice saying the sounds closer and closer together.

Talk about it

  • What vowel sound do you hear in the middle?
  • What sound does this letter or letter team make?
