What kids do

“Draw a line from each big letter to its small letter. Say the letter’s sound as you go!”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Trace the big and small letters: Aa to Ff

Words on this sheet

AaBbCcDdEeFf

Teacher tip

Point out the letters that look alike in both sizes (c, f) and the ones that change (a, b, d, e).

How to use it

  • Let kids trace with a finger before a pencil.
  • Play “I spy something that starts with…” after the sheet.
  • Use the sheet as a quick check after you teach the sound, then reteach in a small group.

Watch for

b, d, p and q mix-ups. Teach “bat before ball” for b: the line comes first.

Talk about it

  • What sound do you hear at the very start of this word?
  • What sound does this letter or letter team make?

Take it further

Make a letter collage: kids cut out pictures from magazines that start with the letter.
