What kids do

“Fill in each row. Write the number in standard form, expanded form and word form.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Standard form: 4,562. Expanded form: 4,000 + 500 + 60 + 2. Word form: four thousand five hundred sixty-two.

Sample problems

  • 6,000 + 200 + 90
  • 30,000 + 4,000 +
  • 900 + 10 + 8
  • 90,000 + 100 +

Teacher tip

Remind kids that we never say “and” in a whole number in word form, and that commas go in the same places as in the number.

How to use it

  • Read each number out loud as a class so kids hear the place names.
  • Let kids use a place value mat or a folded paper chart under their sheet.
  • Do the first problem together under a document camera, then let kids finish on their own.

Watch for

Rounding the wrong digit. Have kids underline the place they are rounding to first.

Talk about it

  • What happens to a number when you move a digit one place to the left?
  • Which problem was the hardest? What made it hard?

Take it further

Play “build the biggest number” with digit cards in pairs.
