What kids do

“Count, trace, fill in the number and draw. Do one box at a time.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. 1. Count the hearts.
  2. 2. What number comes next?
  3. 3. Trace the letters. Then write your own.
  4. 4. Circle the group that has more.
  5. 5. Draw something that starts with M. (moon? mouse? mitten?)

Teacher tip

Read each direction aloud the first few weeks, then let kids try on their own as they learn the format.

How to use it

  • Have the page on desks before kids arrive so they can start right away.
  • Go over the answers together at the start of the lesson.
  • Introduce the sheet once, model it, then make it part of a routine so kids know what to expect.

Watch for

Kids who arrive late and feel rushed. Let them finish at another time.

Talk about it

  • Which problem was the easiest this morning? Which was the hardest?
  • Why do you think we use this in our classroom?

Take it further

Let early finishers write their own problem for tomorrow’s page.
