What kids do

“Your teacher wants to know how today went. Be honest and kind. Leave it on your desk when you finish.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. Today our class was…
  2. 2 a little rough
  3. Something that went well
  4. Something that was hard
  5. How I helped our guest teacher
  6. A thank-you note to our guest teacher

Teacher tip

Read the reflections the day you return and talk with the class about how it went.

How to use it

  • Leave clear, short directions and an answer key where the sub can find it.
  • Update the folder each grading period, as routines and students change.
  • Print it on colored paper so kids and helpers can spot it quickly.

Watch for

Activities that need too much teaching. A sub day is for review, not new lessons.

Talk about it

  • What does a great sub day look like?
  • How can this help you be ready to learn?

Take it further

Have kids write a thank-you note to the sub at the end of the day.

US Letter, prints well in black and white. Free for home and classroom use: print as many copies as you need.
