What kids do

“Write 1, 2, 3 or 4 in each square. Each row and column has each number once, and every < or > sign must be true.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. The sign points to the smaller number: 2 < 3 and 4 > 1. Up and down, ∧ means the top number is smaller and ∨ means the top number is bigger.

Teacher tip

Remind kids that the open side of the sign faces the bigger number.

How to use it

  • Let kids work with a partner and explain their thinking.
  • Start with an easier puzzle before the harder ones.
  • Let kids work with a partner so they talk through their thinking.

Watch for

Frustration on hard puzzles. Give one clue at a time as a hint.

Talk about it

  • Which clue helped you the most?
  • What strategy did you use?
