What kids do

“Start at 4. Color the 8 next to it, then 12, and keep counting by 4s all the way to 80. Move up, down or sideways.”

Printed on the sheet:

  1. The 4 is in the top left corner. The path ends at 80. Tip: say the 4s out loud as you go: 4, 8, 12, 16…

Teacher tip

Have kids write the counting-by-4s list as a guide.

How to use it

  • Show kids how to work backward from the end when they get stuck.
  • Use mazes as a calm, quiet activity after a busy part of the day.
  • Use it as a center, an early finisher choice, an indoor recess activity or a sub day page.

Watch for

Frustration with big mazes. Offer a smaller maze first.

Talk about it

  • Was it easier to start at the beginning or the end?
  • What was the trickiest part? How did you get past it?

Take it further

Time a second try to see if kids get faster.
