What Is “Trace Then Color: Alien Cyborgs“?

This 106-page paperback activity book features 50 original cartoon characters, each one a hybrid of alien and robot. From one-eyed robotic jelly creatures to cyborg space cyclops, each character is unique, imaginative, and full of personality. The designs range from silly and funny to slightly spooky and strange — a perfect mix for kids who enjoy offbeat, creative styles.

Every page gives kids a full character to trace first and then color however they want. The act of tracing encourages focus and careful observation while reducing the fear of getting things wrong. That makes it easier for kids to build drawing confidence in a low-pressure way.

The final step — coloring — gives them a chance to make the character their own. Bright green? Shiny silver? Covered in pink slime? The choice is theirs.

If your child has ever looked at a robot alien and thought, “I want to draw that,” this book will help them learn how to draw robot aliens by guiding them step-by-step through the process in a fun and approachable format.

Book Details

Who Is This Book For?

  • Kids ages 3–12 who love sci-fi, space creatures, or cartoons
  • Beginners who are learning the basics of drawing through repetition
  • Budding character designers who want to develop their own drawing style
  • Fans of robots, aliens, or anything out of this world

It’s also great for:

  • Parents looking for screen-free activities that still feel engaging
  • Art teachers and homeschoolers looking for creative learning tools
  • Anyone who loves unusual characters with lots of imagination

Why Tracing Works for Young Artists

The Trace Then Color series was created to help kids build confidence while exploring their creativity. Tracing isn’t cheating — it’s training. It teaches hand coordination, introduces form and proportion, and helps younger kids learn how lines work together to build a whole character.

In Trace Then Color: Alien Cyborgs, every character starts with strong, easy-to-follow lines. Kids trace directly over the character with pencil, marker, or crayon, then jump straight into the coloring. That means every page offers:

  • Instant drawing success
  • A chance to practice without stress
  • Opportunities to experiment with color and personality

When kids learn how to draw robot aliens through tracing, they absorb how each shape and line works together to create the whole. Over time, they’ll start adding their own tweaks — maybe a third eye here, or a different antenna — and eventually begin designing their own versions from scratch.

What Makes Alien Cyborgs Fun to Draw?

Robot aliens are a perfect subject for kids. Why? Because there are no rules! A robot alien doesn’t need to look like anything from Earth — it can be as weird, wild, and wacky as your imagination allows.

Some of the designs inside this book include:

  • A bug-eyed alien with robot crab claws
  • A hovering eyeball creature in a glass jar
  • A mechanically enhanced wolf-like alien

This wide variety of characters gives kids a huge range of personalities, shapes, and textures to play with. And since each page is a clean, single-sided design, markers and heavy coloring won’t bleed through.

When you learn how to draw robot aliens, you open the door to your imagination. Kids can create their own characters, dream up the planet they came from, and even build a story around their strange new friends.

Part of the Trace Then Color Series

The Trace Then Color series includes dozens of books designed to teach kids how to draw and engage their creativity. Each book focuses on a specific theme — from cute animals to monsters, food characters to mythical creatures — and follows the same simple but powerful format:

  1. Trace the character
  2. Color it in
  3. Imagine your own variation

That approach makes it easier for kids to jump into drawing without being intimidated. It gives them repetition and structure without removing the fun.

With Trace Then Color: Alien Cyborgs, kids get the added bonus of drawing some of the wildest, weirdest characters we’ve ever made.

Build Real Drawing Skills — While Having Fun

Kids might not realize it, but they’re building real artistic skills as they trace and color each page. As they work their way through the book, they’re practicing:

  • Pencil control and steady line work
  • Visual observation and shape recognition
  • Pattern design and creative thinking
  • Color theory and composition

These are foundational skills that transfer to other forms of drawing and creative expression. And because each character is so unique, kids stay engaged and interested.

And let’s face it: drawing a half-robot, half-octopus alien is way more fun than tracing a basic shape or object. That fun factor makes a big difference in keeping kids motivated.

A Perfect Gift for Creative Kids

Whether it’s a birthday, a holiday, or just a way to encourage creativity at home, Trace Then Color: Alien Cyborgs makes a great gift. It’s screen-free, low-mess, and endlessly entertaining.

Pair it with colored pencils or markers, and you’ve got a complete art kit for hours of imaginative play. And because it’s part of a larger series, you can mix and match themes based on your child’s interests.

If your child wants to learn how to draw robot aliens, this book is the perfect place to start.

Meet The Author & Artist

Kevin Coulston is a children’s book author, illustrator, cartoonist, and member of the National Cartoonists Society. Over the course of his career, he has published more than 100 books, including instructional drawing books, activity books, comics, graphic novels, and children’s picture books.

His popular How to Draw, Trace Then Color, and Draw by Grid series have helped thousands of aspiring young artists learn to draw through simple, approachable lessons featuring hundreds of Kevin’s original cartoon characters.

Kevin is also the creator of the comic series Dylan McVillain and The Adventures of a 4th Grade Space Captain, as well as the children’s picture book series Alexis and the T-Rexes. In addition to his publishing work, Kevin created, wrote, illustrated, and animated the web series Bad Jokes with Ugly Folks, starring legendary voice actors Rob Paulsen and Tara Strong.

Kevin believes anyone can learn to draw—and that learning is a lot more fun when the characters you’re drawing are weird, silly, and just a little ridiculous.

What Our Customers Are Saying

“The author really does a great job demonstrating how easy (and rewarding!) it can be to draw seemingly ordinary things you (and your little ones!) may feel too intimidated to try drawing without the step-by-step guide! Putting already-known shapes together and making something new and original is a fantastic way to learn! And recognizing that you can add your own twists and personality to your drawings makes all the difference. I think it’s a fun, original approach to building confidence for a lifelong hobby. I have the ebook copy, and can only imagine how great a physical copy would be!”

– Daenarah [Amazon Review]

“There are several of these fun books by this author. My kids and I have had a lot of fun with these. It’s a great activity to do as a family and see how they all turn out. Almost like a sip and paint but more of a juice box and draw.”

– Allison B. [Amazon Review]

My kids can’t wait to start drawing these monsters in their illustrations! The many different moods of the monsters appeal to their different personalities. We love the many options, styles, and opportunities to expand upon the characters. Recommended for all ages!

– Kasey [Amazon Review]

“Kevin has put out many books on drawing and animation, and has such a great feel for HOW to explain the process. His art is so expressive and kid-friendly, but his real strength is in his ability to really explain and show how it’s done, making it accessible to kids and adults. I’m a firm believer that not everyone who “can do” can teach, but Kevin does both beautifully! Pick this up and watch kids have a blast making robots of all sorts, while learning great fundamental art skills at the same time!”

– Tom R. [Amazon Review]

“My 5yo LOVES this book! The drawings are cute and the instructions are easy to follow along with. She gets a kick out of drawing muffin monsters and ketchup monsters and it actually keeps her pretty focused for long periods of time.”

– Monica [Amazon Review]

“This is a fantastic book for kids who love art, cartoons, comic books, or just having fun! There are a lot of characters to choose from, and really easy step-by-step instructions to follow. You child will have a blast drawing these fun, silly characters! And just in time for Easter baskets!”

– Bestmomever [Amazon Review]

“This is a very good book for kids that want to learn to draw, my sons love it and Kevin does a great job of making drawing fun and not intimidating. Highly recommended for the long summer hours!”

– David D. [Amazon Review]
